I haven't quite committed myself to this Elricest fanfic yet, and I've run into several snags just getting the prologue ready. I always have a hard time finding a good place to start, and this fic is no different...I've rewritten the beginning three times now. The intro always gets me, so rather than trying to do a grand setup, I've gone for in medias res. I'm a little worried that it may be too rushed, though.

So...I know I don't have many Elricest fans on my friend's list, but if anyone could share their opinion, I'd be really grateful. ._.

Sand.

Sometimes it seemed like that was all there was to this country. Just sand, stacked and molded and baked into pillars by the unforgiving desert sun. It was a bitter thought, Edward knew, but if it wasn't for the people who lived their lives here, Xerxes would be an absolutely desolate place.

Just a withered sandcastle out in the middle of nowhere. With summer days so hot they could melt steel.

Ed sighed and wiped the sweat from his brow, leaning his elbows against the sill of an open window. There wasn't even a hint of a breeze, and it wasn't long before he retreated back into his room and sprawled across his bed. There would be no relief from the blistering heat today.

There was a knock at his door. "Edward! Your bath is ready."

He was up and at the door in record time, his previous fears of death by heatstroke abated by the prospect of submerging himself in cool water. He was less enthused about the reason why he had to bathe so early in the day, which was why he was mumbling obscenities under his breath when he opened the door to a very confused Maria. "Edward?"

"Thanks," Ed brushed passed her, feeling a little guilty for being rude. It was hard not to be irritable when it felt like the sun was mating with his back, and his bath was spoiled by the knowledge that he had to be squeaky clean when he went to the banquet where his brother was expected to find his future wife.

It was absolutely ridiculous. Al was only sixteen years old; he couldn't even remember his brother having a childhood crush, and now he was being pressured to find the love of his life within the span of a two hour social function. Only it wasn't the love of his life that they wanted him to find, Ed thought sourly. Any woman of high status would satisfy them as long as she could produce an heir. Because Al was of age and the people of Xerxes had little patience when it came to preserving the royal bloodline.

They couldn't care less about what Al wanted.

Despite himself, Ed's lips quirked up in a wry smile. It was ironic; when they were young, they'd once been told that they would rule a kingdom. They were wooed by promises of grandeur and nobility, when in reality they were just rungs on the ladder of a heritage that spanned generations-- a ladder which they were expected to continue.

They weren't princes or kings. They were breeding stock.

Woah. I like where this is leading - it looks to be a highly original AU. But it also promises to have a LOT of back story etc. which will make it complicated. If you can stick to it and all the fleshing out, I think it'd be spectacular! The intro above is perfect for whetting my Elricest appetite - though tbh, that doesn't take much :P

Yay! I was a little concerned that it would be so AU that it wouldn't be interesting anymore, so I'm glad it didn't end up like that. As for fleshing it out, I've really only got a rough idea as to where the plot is going-- but that's something that usually works itself out while I'm writing. Thank you for the vote of confidence-- I feel like I can really tackle this one now. =)
